The Ontario Winter Games will take place from March 4 – 7, 2010 and will be held in Bracebridge, Georgian Bay, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Lake of Bays, Muskoka Lakes, and Sudbury.

History of the Games
 
  • Started in 1970
  • Showcase for Amateur sport
  • Province’s largest multi-sport events
  • Provides young athletes with development and competitive opportunities to prepare them for national and international competitions
  • Gives the public a chance to see some of Ontario’s best amateur athletes compete at Provincial level
  • A program of the Sport Alliance of Ontario (contracted delivery agent of the Ministry of Health Promotion
  • An integral component of Athlete Development in Ontario
  • Encourages sport participation and developing amateur athletes

Q .What is the role of the Games Organizing Committee?
 
A.
  •  Booking sport venues
  • Arranging for the necessary sport equipment to in place for the sports
  • Organizing athlete transportation to and from the games and to and from hotels and sport venues
  • Organizing volunteers for overall games organization and sport venues
  • Registration & Accreditation
  • Accommodations
  • Opening Ceremonies
  • Food Services
  • Awards & Ceremonies
  • Athlete safety in partnership with Provincial Sport Organizers

Anticipated attendance
  • There will be 3,500 participants including athletes, coaches and officials
  • Muskoka is expecting over 7500 visitors for the Games, primarily  parents and friends of the athletes.

Q. How does it benefit younger athletes- where do they go from here?
 
A.
  • For some sports, this is a stepping stone to National competitions
  • It gives them the opportunity to participate in a “multi-sport” event

Q. How do the games communities benefit?
 
A.
  • Hotels are booked solid, restaurants are busy, puts all of the Partner Communities on the map
  • Gives them a chance to showcase the future representatives of Canadian Sport
  • Gives them a chance to showcase local athletes as well should they qualify for the games.

Q. Will this event create more government awareness for amateur sports?
 
A.
  • The Provincial Government is the Presenting Sponsor. These are their games.

Q. There are a lot of youth-oriented events being supported by the individual sports programs at Sport Alliance …., why is it better to have an overall program such as the Ontario Winter Games and Summer Games for example.
 
A.
 
  • This gives the sports a chance to award a “Provincial” status to the winners
  • It gives the feel of Canada Games/Olympics
  • They can showcase their sport and check out other sports

Q. How are the games being funded, e.g. sponsorship, Parks & Rec., Ministry of Health?
 
A.
  • Ministry of Health Promotion and Spoet Alliance of Ontario provide a $600,000 hosting grant for the games.
  • We receive some funding through “Quest for Gold” which is designed to enhance the sport experience for the participants.
  • The rest of the funding comes from our “partner communities”, sponsors, and donations.
